England has made four changes to the lineup that will face Australia in the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne.
Most notably, the tourists have had enough of their ineffective batting lineup, benching Surrey combo Rory Burns and Ollie Pope in favor of the returning Zak Crawley and Jonny Bairstow.
In other news, the bowling has been rotated once more, with Mark Wood returning following a breather in Adelaide and left-arm spinner Jack Leach being reinstated to the XI. Chris Woakes and Stuart Broad will be replaced.
Burns and Pope have had a slow start to the series, which England leads 2-0 following thrashings in the first two Tests, with opener Burns scoring 51 runs at 12.75 and Pope scoring 48 runs at 12 from number six.
Despite a terrible showing in Brisbane, England retained faith with a weak top seven, but a similar performance in the day/night Test at Adelaide has left head coach Chris Silverwood and captain Joe Root searching for alternatives.
Burns was clean bowled by the first delivery of the trip, but he showed signs of warming up with a gutsy 34 in his last innings. With Crawley's comeback expedited by some good performances in the nets, England may have contemplated removing Burns' starting partner Haseeb Hameed instead, but have opted to back the younger player.
The number 31 may have counted against Burns in three ways: his age, the amount of caps he has won, and his rounded-up Test average. He is the only England player other than Joe Root to have scored a Test century in 2021, against New Zealand at Lord's, but he has also been bowled for zero on six times, and it is possible that he has reached the end of his international career.
The Pope, on the other hand, is a different story. England is still persuaded that the 23-year-old is the finest talent of his generation, but his growth has stopped, and his recurrent inability to create extended innings have become an insurmountable obstacle after 22 caps. His average fell below 30 in Adelaide, and while he will undoubtedly be seen again, some rethinking of his approach may be necessary.
The cavalry's numbers aren't much better; Crawley was killed in action.
